Three Westley Richards Shotguns Currently for Sale at the U.S. Agency

Westley Richards & Co. is one of the most prolific gunmakers in England and has produced a wide variety of shotguns over the last 200 years. From different variations of the firm’s famous droplock, to sidelocks, to what is no doubt the best iteration of the droplock shotgun currently being produced today.

We have a fine selection of pre-owned Westley Richards shotguns currently for sale at the U.S. Agency that are excellent examples of Westley’s gunmaking over the centuries.

The first is a Westley Richards 12g Highest Quality Hand Detachable Lock Shotgun completed in 1929. Westley's best quality guns with game scene engraving were listed in the 1912 catalog as the Model De Luxe but by the 1928 catalog it is labeled the "Highest" Quality. This gun also  features Westley Richards' ejectors and patent One Trigger.

As was popular during the time, the gun is also fitted with a "cross bolt and tang lever" described in catalogs of this era as a "quadruple" grip due to the fact the cross bolt fits through the hole in the top rib and the top lever bolts onto the bite cut into the rib extension. A thinly veiled variance on Greener’s concept. This bolting system was offered as an alternative to Westley’s distinctive snap lever and model ‘C’ doll’s head extension and when this bolting system is encountered it will more than likely have a square back shape and raised side panels with clipped fences vs. the scroll back shape normally associated with Westley Richards droplock shotguns.

Westley Richards & Co. 12g Highest Quality Hammerless Ejector Shotgun with Hand Detachable Locks

Classic Westley Richards deluxe game scene engraving on the action sides feature pheasants and partridge and the cover plate is neatly engraved “Westley Richards Patent One Trigger” over the profile of an English pointer, and all of this surrounded by a traditional scroll pattern.

Stock and forend are nicely figured and wonderfully checkered in a very fine, flat top pattern with fancy and pointed borders, traditional drop points and checkered side panels. The stock features a very elegant pistol grip with a guard tang extending to the horn grip cap. The gun still retains its original checkered horn butt plate and splinter forend with a Deeley latch and a horn forend tip.

The gun is in remarkable original condition and appears virtually unfired still featuring almost all of its original oil finish on the stock, original black on the barrels, cover plate, trigger bow and top lever and almost 99% of the original bright, vivid color hardening. This gun is virtually a time capsule and a wonderful example of what a new gun from Westley Richards looked like in 1929.

Westley Richards & Co. 20g William Bishop Sidelock Ejector Shotgun

Westley Richards & Co. 20g Sidelock Ejector ca. 1979, a gun known as the William Bishop model during this period. Built on a bar action sidelock with gold lined cocking indicators, two triggers and an automatic safety. The action has beaded fences and a nicely shaped square bar with a brushed finish. The bright finish highlights the full coverage Deluxe Bold Scroll engraved (and signed) by the venerable Keith Thomas. The Maker’s name on the lock plates and “SAFE” are inlaid in gold and the Maker’s name is nicely engraved in a shield on the bottom of the action.

The well laid out walnut stock has traditional drop points and a “Woodward” style pistol grip. The rolled trigger bow’s tang extends to a carved horn, single screw grip cap. The splinter forend is fitted with Southgate type ejectors and an Anson push rod and both it and the stock are finished in a classic, and very well executed, flat top checkering with Mullered borders. The LOP is 14 7/8” over a point pattern checkered butt and the stock oval remains blank.

This 6 lbs. 5 oz. gun swings fast but is not flighty. The Chopper lump, 26” barrels have original 1979 Birmingham proofs for 2 ¾" chambers. The barrels are choked ¼ and 3/8 (or Imp. Cyl and Light Mod.) and fitted with a “Churchill” style rib.

The gun remains in excellent, original condition and is furnished in a very high-quality O&L case by American case maker, Huey of Kansas City, MO.
